Strategy & opening play
Pawn structure
Pawn structure is the arrangement of pawns. It shapes open files, space, weak squares and useful plans. Since pawns cannot move backwards, pawn moves are long-term decisions. The same structure can be good or bad depending on piece activity.
A practical example
A closed pawn chain may support a kingside attack while a pawn break develops on the other wing. If the centre opens, bishop diagonals and king safety may suddenly become more important.
A common mistake
Automatically labelling doubled or isolated pawns as bad. Open files, active pieces and attacking chances can compensate for a structural weakness. The label alone does not provide a plan.
Try this in your next review
Identify open and half-open files. Mark possible pawn breaks and ask which pieces benefit if the position opens. Only then decide which pawn move to play.
