Tactics & checkmates
Attraction
Attraction draws or forces an enemy piece onto a specific unfavourable square. That placement enables a tactic such as a fork or checkmate. Deflection instead emphasizes the defensive duty that a piece abandons when it moves.
A practical example
A checking sacrifice draws the enemy king onto a square where a knight can fork king and queen. The idea wins only if the king really must reach that square.
A common mistake
Seeing an appealing target square while overlooking other replies. The opponent might capture with a different piece, move the king elsewhere or block the check.

Work backwards: which square would allow a fork or mate? Then search for a forcing move that brings the enemy piece there, checking every alternative response.
