Position evaluation
A position evaluation estimates which side stands better and why. Material, king safety, piece activity, pawn structure and concrete tactics all contribute. An engine number summarizes many factors but does not by itself explain a playable plan.
A practical example
An evaluation of +1.5 is often displayed as an advantage for White on a pawn-unit scale. It is neither an actual extra pawn and a half nor a guarantee of winning. The perspective and display depend on the tool.
A common mistake
Reading a number without its main line or directly comparing different engines and search depths. In tactical positions, one overlooked reply can change the assessment completely.
Try this in your next review
Evaluate the position yourself first and give two concrete reasons. Then inspect the engine line and identify the move that explains the difference. Translate the result into an understandable plan.
